OPERATING A QUALITATIVE PRIVATE SCHOOL: ESSENTIAL DOS AND DON'TS

Do:
1. Develop a Vision and Mission Statement: A strong, well thought out vision and mission statement sets the tone for a successful school. This can help define the school's purpose, educational philosophy and objectives. Involving faculty, staff, students, and community members in the creation of this statement can lead to a greater sense of collaboration and ownership.

2. Establish Quality Standards: Quality standards should be set in regards to curriculum, staff development, student learning and professional service. Quality private school management should be dedicated to identifying and continuously improving these standards to ensure educational excellence.

3. Create an Effective Marketing and Communications Strategy: Quality marketing and communications are essential to ensure the success of a private school. It is essential to create strategies to promote the school's values and mission, as well as different programs and activities. Properly managing relationships with parents, alumni and the community can also be beneficial to the school’s success.

4. Facilitate an Active Learning Environment: Active learning environments, in which students are actively engaged and involved, can have a positive impact on learning outcomes. It is important to provide a variety of activities that promote different kinds of learning, such as project-based learning, student-led discussions, and service-based activities.

5. Enhance Teacher Engagement: Teachers who feel valued and encouraged to work in teams can have greater impacts on student learning and academic performance. Establishing clear communication protocols between teachers, staff and administrators, providing on-going training and support are just some of the ways to facilitate a more engaged teaching environment.

Don't:
1. Overlook the Necessity of a Strategic Plan: Although many private schools tend to lean towards a more informal structure, regular strategic planning is essential to properly manage all school operations. A well-crafted plan, which outlines school objectives and how they will be achieved, is essential to managing school practices and resources effectively.

2. Be Restrictive in Scheduling: Effective schedules that allow students to explore different interests and subject areas can be beneficial to learning outcomes. While some levels of structure must be maintained in order to ensure educational objectives are met, it is also important to provide flexibility to allow students to pursue their own learning.

3. Neglect Professional Development: Professional development is necessary for teachers, staff and administrators to stay up to date with best practices, new trends, and technologies. Encouraging these personnel to attend workshops, conferences and other events allows them to stay on top of their field and apply the best practices to their work.

4. Sacrifice Sufficient Resources: Limited resources can be detrimental to a quality school. Allocating funds and personnel to support the school’s vision and mission statements is necessary to ensure quality standards are met and new growth opportunities are pursued.
